<p> I often would hear people claim that &#8220;sleep time&#8221; is a waste of time and yet, this time is what makes the rest of your life better! Read on the learn why.</p>
<p>The belief that can make up sleep is actually a myth, simply not true. You actually accrue a “sleep debt” and ultimately you crash or develop health problems.</p>
<p>Let’s take a look at the phases of sleep.</p>
<p>For the majority of the night you are in non REM sleep.  In the first phase of sleep, you are in a light sleep and may even go between awake and falling asleep.  </p>
<p>The “stress” hormone cortisol ideally decreases in the evening and then is at its lowest at night with it rising in the morning in order to wake up and be alert. When stress is chronic, cortisol can actually peak at night. Do you get a “second wind” and have extra energy at night? This happens when you eat late at night also.  Cortisol then drops in the morning in this reversed Cortisol cycle, making it difficult to focus and or concentrate in the morning.</p>
<p>It is important to turn this back around because the lack of quality sleep increases fatigue and sets you up for a more chronic stress pattern and or adrenal exhaustion.</p>
<p>The next phase is the beginning of sleep. You lose your awareness of the surroundings, body temperature drops and breathing and heart rate are regular.</p>
<p>In deep sleep, Stages 3 and 4, you enter the most restorative phase of sleep. Blood pressure drops, your muscles relax, blood supply increases to muscles and repair and tissue growth occur, energy is restored, growth hormone is released as are other hormones.</p>
<p>In Rapid Eye Movement (REM) which accounts for about 25% of the night, your brain is very active, you dream, muscle may become immobile, energy is restored supporting optimal performance the next day.</p>
<p>REM sleep occurs in the first 90 minutes of sleep and then every 90 minutes thereafter with longer cycles as the night goes on.</p>
<p><strong>Ways to improve the quality of sleep:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Sleep in a darkened room</li>
<li>Go to sleep the same time every night, wake up the same time</li>
<li>Do not eat right before bed. Not only does this contribute to weight gain due to  interference with a fat burning hormone, leptin, but it puts added pressure on your heart.</li>
<li>Keep your room free from the drama and violence of TV. If you need to have something on, place soft music, preferably classical.</li>
<li>Keep water and a notebook by your bed in case you wake up during the night and think of something to do or have an idea. Writing it down will allow your mind to relax again and fall back asleep.</li>
<li>Sleep in a cool room.</li>
<li>Free your bedroom of clutter.</li>
<li>Tell yourself as you lay down, you will have a restful and deep sleep, waking up at the time you desire.</li>
</ol>
